Beginning to explore personal growth by beginning therapy can be an exciting and difficult process, but one that takes bravery. There may be a variety of reasons for taking this step towards therapy: a variety of life transitions, interpersonal relationships, anxiety, parenting, trauma, depression, substance misuse, emotional regulation, imposter experiences or other challenges. Our therapists help you prioritize what you need and navigate your concerns and barriers as well as identify your assets and strengths.

We customize a plan with each client from the start, whether this is in-person or virtual therapy, but the experience is co-authored alongside the client. From frequency to location, we make a schedule that clicks with you. We focus on assets. We explore challenges as well as consider all of the roles in your life and the narrative within your story to integrate the whole person into client-centered, client lead care.

We will work together to determine the level of discomfort anxiety is causing in your life whether you’re experiencing a period of anxiousness or an anxiety disorder. We’ll focus on your mental, physical and emotional wellness because healthy living shouldn’t be isolated. Our value in relationship centered growth begins with focusing on the match between client and therapist. The therapeutic alliance is a significant component to facilitate health, growth, and desired change.

During your first meeting your therapist will offer you the opportunity to explain your feelings and the support you are seeking. If you’re not sure where to begin, that’s perfectly fine. You and your therapist will explore what’s to come together as a team. We believe therapy should be a pressure-free environment where your comfort and trust in us is the priority. We’ll start the conversation where you’re ready and move at a pace informed and led by you.

Together, you and your therapist will create a comprehensive strategy for your experience. We will explore trauma and deep-rooted questions, when the time is right, but truly dive into relationship development to foster safety, trust, and openness that leads to your personal choice in gradual momentum and real improvement.

Our approach is focused on the mental, physical, and emotional wellness with a focus on the whole body. In doing so, we will work with your primary care doctor and/or assist in identifying a physician or psychiatrist.to look for the underlying cause of your depression. There may be issues related to sleep or nutrition or it may be hormonal, seasonal, situational, inflammatory or a combination. Simultaneously, we’ll work together to help you create healthy routines, gain behavioral tools, and implement health coping mechanisms.

Our therapists take on many approaches that have been proven effective including Acceptance Commitment Therapy, EMDR, somatic experiencing and exposure therapy. EMDR (eye movement desensitization reprocessing) is a therapy proven successful for the treatment of PTSD. Somatic experiencing includes bringing awareness to the mind and body while engaging in talk therapy.

Session frequency and duration are agreed upon based on therapeutic relevance and recommendation, but also based upon client desires, needs, and willingness. Sessions can be as brief as 30 minutes or as long as two hours meeting once per week, once per month, or even daily if you choose!

Lisa Michaels (she/her) is a LLMSW, having recently graduated from the University of Michigan’s School of Social Work. As a Lead Therapist with BLND, Lisa is particularly interested in Positive Psychology and combining multiple therapeutic modalities to best suit each client. Lisa’s background is rooted within the professional performing arts: she holds a BFA in Musical Theatre, and is a Master in Classical and Contemporary Text (Acting) awarded by the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Lisa truly believes that the arts and social work are closely coupled, and she brings that creative lens into her therapy sessions through various grounding exercises, guided imagery, and voice work, to name a few.

Lisa hopes to blend her extensive performance experience with her clinical therapy work to positively transform and reform the creative arts industries, starting with the folks who directly produce, foster, imagine, and champion that artistry. When not working as a therapist, Lisa performs professionally in the Metro-Detroit area, is a Teaching Artist with Shakespeare in Detroit, and often relaxes with car karaoke and (most recently) needlepoint.
